UEFA held the qualifying draw Sunday for the 2012 European Championship, which will be played in Poland and Ukraine.
Spain, the defending champion, was placed in a group with Scotland and the Czech Republic. France, in what has been an ongoing theme in the last year, appeared to get a break: its group consists of Romania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Belarus, Albania and Luxembourg — none of which qualified for this summer’s World Cup.
Germany, meanwhile, grumbled about being placed in a group that will require long trips to Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. The Germans, who lost to Spain in the 2008 final, will also face Belgium, Austria and Turkey.
England, which did not qualify for Euro 2008, was placed in a group that included neighboring Wales, as well as Bulgaria, Montenegro and Switzerland.
The nine group winners and the best second-place team qualify automatically. The other eight second-place teams advance to playoffs.
Group A: Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Germany, Kazakhstan, Turkey
Group B: Andorra, Armenia, Ireland, Macedonia, Russia, Slovakia
Group C: Estonia, Faeroe Islands, Italy, Northern Ireland, Serbia, Slovenia
Group D: Albania, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, France, Luxembourg, Romania
Group E: Finland, Hungary, Moldova, Netherlands, San Marino, Sweden
Group F: Croatia, Georgia, Greece, Israel, Latvia, Malta
Group G: Bulgaria, England, Montenegro, Switzerland, Wales
Group H: Cyprus, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Portugal
Group I: Czech Republic, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Scotland, Spain
